Percentages

When the doctors came through on rounds this morning I asked them what the chances are of making it to 34 weeks. Here is what I was told:

50% of women give birth within 48 hours of their water breaking.

Judging by when my fluid levels changed, I'm already beyond that point.

Of the remaining 50%:

25% give birth within seven days of their water breaking. I'm still within that seven days, but not by much.

The last 25%, the group the doctor suspects I'm in, just have to take things one day at a time.

So from here on out we are operating under the notion that we may have a baby any. day. now.

Of course this has pretty much been the case since I first entered the hospital on February 10, but still, now that my water has broken, it seems so much more likely.

I will continue to cling to the one-day-at-a-time philosopy, but also set little goals for us. . . (not that the baby cares about my goal-setting) like how about not being born until at least March.

*****

A reassuring thing the doctor did say this morning was that the baby has a 100% chance of surviving with no long-term complications, even if he's born today.

100%? I was not aware that the medical establishment was capable of making such claims. But you know what? I'll take it.

That 100% is the most awesome number of all! That is wonderful news. You might be nervous to deliver this early, but he will be fine. Take it easy.

Hey Kelsey! You're doing great- I can't hardly keep up with the blogs. I'm really new to the idea myself, so not sure how the tagging thing works, but if you haven't checked mine out yet, visit: http://floridaink.blogspot.com/ And I gotta say, yours is way more interesting and funny (even before your littlest one got all dramatic on us)-- but this is my first. So mostly I don't knwo what's going on, but I'm freaked out by it all the same!

Another link that may be helpful- but probably not since you've got your hands full... a while ago I think you mentioned clearing out old textbooks. Someone recommended this site- they BUY them and you don't even have to pay for shipping.

Okay, this comment is long enough for now :) We're still praying for you and the WHOLE family...

Peace, Kristi
ps- oh yeah, justin case... I'm a cousin of Matt's mom, but closer to your age, and we met once at a pool party at Pattys when Harper was smaller :)

Just sending you positive thoughts via Sam's blog, "Back to Me." Had twins in August myself. I hope all ends well and it sounds like the prognosis is great. Keep up the great work!

cool. take care and will the baby to either choose the 28th or wait until at least the 1st. My hubby has a leap year birthday (morons scheduled a c-section that way) and he feels cheated the other 3 years and really wants to live it up since he doesnt have a 'real' birthday but once every 4 years.

Oh my gosh, Kels! I can't believe you're back in! Wow, it seems like things are so crazy right now, but I am definitely praying for every single day that the little guy can stay put. It looks like our boys will be closer in age even than we suspected! Especially if you go another 3 or 4 weeks...
And BTW - today I didn't have to feed Katy lunch because I had an appointment and you know what I ate? Microwave popcorn. Good one.

I just wanted to add. Both of my girls were born early. Darsie at 28 weeks and Elise at 34. Things will work out. 30 weeks is awesome and each day is even more awesome. And I have officially overused the word awesome.

Good thoughts for you and your family!

I came over from Back To Me/Samantha's. My baby was born at 32 weeks from a placental abruption, so I feel the pain. We are all pulling for you. Big PVs from cyberspace.

P.S. Declan is a healthy and happy 5 year old now!

Coming over from Sam's place to say- best wishes! I have a good feeling you'll skip right over the possibility of a leap year birthday and make it well into March. =)

I find I'm freaking out every time there's a new post from you in the reader. I know every time that it could be DRAMATIC NEWS. But somehow it had not yet sunk in that this baby could truly be born ANY DAY. Like, TODAY. Or TOMORROW. ANY day.

How wonderful to be reassured that baby will be fine, no matter his arrival date. Are they doing any surfactant therapy to help his lungs or anything? (Just wondering, b/c I'm a birth nerd and like all those little details.)
