Twilight

I feel like I ought to apologize for those of you who come here for the content about the kiddos, because it's been a little light on the cute stories lately. And today isn't going to be much better, but I will share this. . .

We have a wreath in our bedroom which is made from dried flowers from my wedding bouquet. Today Harper asked if a magician turned my flowers into a wreath. But she misspoke and said, "mag-ni-tion."

So I have to ask about the Twilight books (don't get angry Shannon, I know you've already told me to read them). Are they worth it? I like to think I have a finger on what is happening in the world of young adult literature and it feels like I'm sidestepping a huge phenomenon by not having read these books. And I even like fantasy, but I don't like vampires. I have never been drawn to vampire books, television, or movies. Which is saying a lot because I'll read/watch almost anything I'm remotely intrigued by. I think this goes back to a time when I learned (I have no idea how) that vampires didn't have reflections and I spent many tooth brushing sessions with my back to the bathroom wall to make sure there weren't any lurking behind me that I couldn't see in the mirror. Sadly, that is a true story.

If you have read the saga please tell me what you think - we'll just pretend I am not capable of making decisions about what to read on my own.

Hi - I've been reading you for a while (found you through Mommy Daisy). I read the Twilight series only because my book club was reading it. I borrowed it from my 13 year old niece and I completely understand why all the teenage girls of America are obsessed with it. It's not too "vampire-y" since most of it deals with "vegetarian vampires" but it does have some disturbing scenes. The books read rather quickly so if you have the spare time, I'd recommend them if for no other reason than to understand the hype and hoopla.

I liked the first one, but thought the second and third were REALLY whiney and the fourth did little more than wrap things up

I read Twilight a few weeks ago to see if I felt it was appropriate reading material for my 12yo. I could not put it down! I completely ignored all other obligations for a full 2 days:) After giving her the ok, my daughter quickly read the book also and LOVED it. (The movie came out right after and she didn't like it however)
I'm now reading the second in the series and I'm not enjoying it. I agree with the previous poster, it is whiny. But, I do plan to finish the rest of the series anyway. I mean, I've got to make sure the rest are appropriate for my daughter too, right?:)

So, I'm not going to read the Twlight books, only because it's just not my thing.

BUT...

I NEVER thought I'd be interested in vampires. And we started watching HBO's True Blood, which is NOT for young adults (it even makes ME uncomfortable sometimes), and I really find it fascinating.

I wouldn't bother. The first one was really good, the second was eeh, the third was decent, but the fourth was Terrible. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't bothered because I was all excited after the first one, and then so let down by the others. If you do read them, get them from the library.

Oh, I think you need to read the first one. It's really more of a romance than a vampire story. Romeo and Juliette with fangs. It's damn good. Really. I read a lot of books. Totally good. (and I have to brag because I read this book pre-pub and knew it was going to be a hit...) Anyhow, the others are pretty good. The last one a let down. Fun stuff for pop culture.
