February Lift (There's a Giveaway!)

We had the most tantalizing glimpse of spring last week, and it was followed by a Sunday afternoon mix of snow, sleet, and hail.  Blerg.

I wonder if I am not the only one with the need for a little pick-me-up these days...

If you are feeling a little anxious waiting for the arrival of SPRING! try this activity to cure the winter blues:

1. Realize a talented author is living in a neighborhood mere minutes from your house.

2. Get your book club to agree to read her latest novel. (Not difficult to do).

3. Use the fact that you once worked in different divisions of the same school to embolden yourself to contact her and ask if she would consider meeting with your book club.

4. Introduce your fun and interesting book club to aforementioned talented author.  Enjoy good food and wine and discussing of books.  Laugh a lot.  Happily realize that said author is indeed as delightful as you would hope the writer of some of your favorite books would be.

I guarantee that following steps one through four will cure your cabin fever, or distract you from it at the very least. However, if you are not fortunate enough to be able to recreate the above scenario (What? You're not ALL loosely connected to talented neighborhood authors?) I can offer you the next best thing - one of her books!

Our book club was so fortunate to enjoy the company of Katrina Kittle as we discussed her most recent novel, The Blessings of the Animals.  Of course the best way to keep a favorite author writing books is to support her by purchasing her already published books.  I'm very happy to do my part by giving her books as gifts and that includes giving one of them to one of YOU!  As a bonus, Katrina has agreed to sign the giveaway book with a personal message, and she may also share some swag from her publisher.

To enter the giveaway just comment on this post by Monday, February 28th.  Any comment will do, but it would be highly efficient to check out the books on Katrina's website and tell me which of her books you'd like to receive if you are the lucky winner.  I also welcome stories of both wonderful or horrific book club experiences.  (Is there such a thing as a horrific book club experience?)  One entry per person, please, and feel free to spread the word.  If there are more than thirty comments I will give away TWO books. (The winner(s) will be chosen by random number generator.)

Oh! I just am so jealous!

I've never heard of this author, but just from perusing her website, I can't choose which book. They all sound fabulous. And even if I don't win your little give-away, I'll definitely be checking these out from my local library ;)

Are they all set in Dayton? I see the book Traveling Light is.

Fun!
I have no horrific book club stories because amazingly I have never been involved in one.
Maybe I should just join yours! You only live an hour or two away from me. Totally worth the commute!

To paraphrase from the neighbor boy in The Incredibles: "That (is) TOTALLY WICKED!"

I'm game!!! I'd love to actually be able to make a book suggestion for my book club. (Well, I could make suggestions, but I fear no one besides me would want to read any of the classics, like Dickens.)

I really enjoyed when my book club read The Children of Men and then watched the movie. Clive Owen is such a hottie!

The only bad book club is when I can't attend because I haven't gotten it together enough to read that month's book.

Her books sound great! I'm really interested in "Traveling Light" and "The Kindness of Strangers." I'm going to have to check them out from the library if I don't win.

They all sound so good..I don't think I could choose. I've never been to a book club. Not enough people around to have one, I guess.

ALL of Katrina's books are wonderful! I own them all but would happily take a new one to replace my worn copies - abused from me reading them more than once and from lending them out to so many friends! Looking forward to more from Katrina! Lucky you - you are neighbors and you got to spend an evening with her. Sandra Brown lives down the street from me... but she's not my style! (At your blog thanks to Katrina's facebook post...)

I absolutely LOVE her books. Traveling Light is my absolute favorite. Blessings is also a wonderful story. I look forward to reading her others. Sadly, I do not own any as I tend to get books from the library unless I get a gift card for Christmas or something. I highly recommend her books though. I plan to reread both of these one day!

Hi! I've read one of Katrina's books and am anxious to read more! On my immediate list are Traveling Light and Blessing of the Animals (I've heard great things about both!)

My horrific book club story is from many years ago when I lived on an Air Force Base near Boston and was involved in a book club where the head General's wife was involved and she kept having us read these dry military novels that her husband recommended. One was fine...but beyond that we all just groaned. The book club got really small until she moved away. Thankfully, I'm in a much nicer group now full of wonderful women who are interested in diverse and varied topics! :)

I completely agree with Delta. All of her books are absolutely wonderful! The first one I read was The Kindness of Strangers. Since then, I've read them all. Traveling Light is my favorite... but they all have such depth, such raw emotion. They're so real and blunt and she's not afraid to go to places that a lot of authors feel are to controversial to visit. Love, love, love her. I am completely and totally envious that you live so close to her.

She is a fantastic writer. I loved The Blessing of the Animals as it pertained to many of the same things going on in my life at the time.
I first found out about wonderful Katrina when I read The Kindness of Strangers. One of the best yet hardest reads I had ever picked up. But I'm glad I did. Great Blog!!!!

So, I am not looking to win, but I had to comment. Since you suggested Katrina Kittle, I have read her books and enjoyed them. I have not read her latest, but I will. I also have not kept up on your blog (sorry) and realized (again) that you and I think very much alike. Your post on the visit with Colleen reminded me of the one I just posted yesterday regarding my fantastic Tuesday outings and the blessing of friends. I swear I didn't steal the idea!! See you soon!

I hear nothing but good things about this author. All of her books look wonderful, and I actually have The Kindness of Strangers in my TBR pile right now. I can't wait to read it. I would love to add Two Truths and a Lie to my reading list. Thanks for the chance :)

yay, fun times! No book club stories, sadly I've not been in one yet. Shocking, as it seems to be EXACTLY what I'd like! Perhaps this year I'll get to it.

The Kindness of Strangers, I think I'd like to read first. THanks!
